Climbed up on a hill standing guard on val cerfone,
the Castle of Ranco is located in a historical area that
tells you about medieval history. Considered as one off
the most interesting from the architectural point of
view, is surrounded by the intact woods of Tuscan Pre-Apennines. The origin of this
fortification dates
back to VI-VII century when Byzantines and Longobards

da Pietramala till
1439 when was given to Baldaccio D'Anghiari, a famous
captain of fortune. In the occasion of his marriage with
Anna Elena Malatesta; eventually in two years time, sold
to Bandaglia's family belonging to the nobility of
Arezzo after Baldaccio was murdered in Firenze.
Witness
of past glory, it was drawn by Leonardo Da Vinci in 1502
on the map of Val di Chiana as Castello di Ranco and in
the fresco representing the map of Tuscany painted in
the gallery of geographic maps of Vatican. Looking at
the ruins of this castle, you'll discover 2000 years of
local culture, churches castles, villages, rural, rural
houses and water-mills; historical places in Tuscany and
Umbria such as Anghiari (9 Kms), Sansepolcro (12 Kms),
Monte Santa Maria Tiberina (15 Kms), Monterchi where you
can admire the beautiful painting "Madonna del
Parto" by Pier Della Francesca(7 Kms), Cittą di
Castello where there is the permanent art exhibition of
iģone of the most famous contemporary painters, Burri

(80 Kms), Gubbio (45 Kms),
Cortona with its
Etruscan Lambario, unique in the whole world,(25
Kms) and other places distant few more
kilometres such as Firenze and Siena. The green
of the woods shading in the chanting view of Val
del Cerfone is visible for a while. The peace
and the magic inspired by the fine
foreshortenings of this valley makes you enjoy a
relaxing natural environment and rediscover a
reality that we may forget in our memory
presenting a heritage of civilisation. |

The
name of this valley derives from a stream called Cerfone
flowing fresh and clear trough oaks and chestnuts trees
of these magnificent woods renowned mushrooms and
truffles the god Cerfo, tutelary deity of the fertility
and health such that for long time the waters of the
streams were considerers sacred. The drawing below |

shows partially what the castle
looked like around 1300-1400 even if, it's
origin dates back to the eleventh century.
Undoubtfully, it's considered as an historical
jewel. Standing as a guard for centuries,
defending the boundaries of Arezzo territories,
being situated on a small hill in the only road
connecting val Tiberina to Arezzo area. Since
Romans period it was a place where to stop for
all the wayfarers passing by for their meals or
rest for any other necessity. But give us the
